The Baroque Opera Workshop at Queens College

presents

The Fairy Queen

by Henry Purcell

The Baroque Opera Workshop at Queens College returns for its 10th year to present a semi-stated performance of The Fairy Queen. The most lavish of all the Restoration Spectaculars, it was first presented in 1692 at the Queen’s Theatre, formerly the Dorset Garden Theatre in London. The libretto was an anonymous adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The dances were by Josias Priest and the music was by Henry Purcell - “who joyns to the Delicacy and Beauty of the Italian way, the Graces and Gayety of the French..” - Peter Anthony Motteux the Gentlemen’s Journal, (1691)
